The Project
RAM Building Consultancy was brought in to address persistent leaks affecting the historic arched roof at St Pancras International station. The leaks were creating slip hazards and inconveniences for passengers, particularly near the top of escalators and ticket barriers.
The Challenges
The leaks had proven difficult to resolve, despite previous attempts at rectification. Water was leaking onto high-traffic areas, creating a safety hazard for passengers. Identifying the stubborn leaks on such a large and historic structure posed a significant challenge, and a targeted approach was needed to avoid unnecessary repairs.
The Solution
RAM’s engineers carefully measured and plotted the locations of the roof leaks, discovering that the source of the problem was a stairwell running over the historic barrel vault roof. The team tested each stanchion and handrail individually, marking the exact points of failure. This meticulous testing allowed the team to pinpoint the specific areas that needed attention and ensured that the client could efficiently hand over the repair work.
The Results
Once the individual leaking stanchions were repaired, the leaks were fully resolved. By identifying the precise problem areas beforehand, only the necessary repairs were conducted, saving the client both time and money. The project was completed without further disruption to station operations, improving safety and convenience for passengers.
Services used:
RAM’s Dynamic Leak Investigation service played a crucial role in tracing the source of the leaks at St Pancras International station. By thoroughly testing each stanchion and handrail on the stairwell, RAM was able to isolate the problem areas and ensure targeted repairs were made. This precise approach minimised unnecessary work and helped deliver an efficient and cost-effective solution for the client.
