The newly published BS 6229:2025 brings significant updates to the design, construction, and maintenance of flat and curved roofs with flexible waterproof coverings. This revision reflects the evolving role of flat roofs in modern buildings, from rainwater management to supporting green spaces and solar energy.

- Enhanced guidance on roof falls and drainage design
- Updated thermal performance requirements, especially for inverted warm blue roofs
- New fire classification and performance standards
- Expanded definitions and terminology, including “multi-functional finishes” for roofs serving as terraces, green spaces, or energy platforms
- Stronger emphasis on air and vapour control, condensation risk, and sound attenuation
- Improved requirements for surface protection, rooftop components, and fire safety
- Clearer protocols for project information exchange, workmanship, inspection, and maintenance
